We’ve addressed it on the blog, we’ve talked about it in meetings, and Director of Field Relations Mike Marumoto has probably covered it in conference calls more times than he’d care to mention: just how much Ganoderma lucidum is it safe for folks to consume? Read on: the answer will shock you!
So just how much Ganoderma lucidum can one person consume in a day? Well, just about as much as they please! Ganoderma is what we call an “adaptogen,” a unique natural substance that “helps to adapt the body or protect it from stress.”"
To be called an adaptogen, a plant-derivative must be:
Non-toxic
Able to produce a “non-specific response” in the body
Able to normalize physiology
…all of which Ganoderma lucidum does!
And unlike other so-called “tonic herbs,” adaptogens like Ganoderma don’t decrease in effectiveness over time. In fact, experts like Dr. Israel I. Brekhman suggest that incorporating adaptogenic herbs like Ganoderma into your diet helps the body build defenses it would otherwise not possess!

E-News favorite and Ganoderma supporter Dr. Andrew T. Weil addressed this issue on his Web site specifically citing Ganoderma (or “reishi” as he calls it) as a solid way to “boost defenses” against infections and other diseases. And as we recently pointed out in our July 23, 2010 E-News article on adaptogens, adaptogens “counter adverse physical, chemical, or biological stressors by raising resistance toward such stress, and allow organisms to ‘adapt’ to a stressful environment.” Pretty cool, right?
Well, what does this have to do with how much Ganoderma is safe to consume? Since Ganoderma is an adaptogen, and consuming adaptogens in large quantities and regularly is not bad for you, that means you can have as much Ganoderma lucidum as you want without feeling guilty!
Of course, as with all things in life, sane and moderate behavior is best, and it’s always vital to consult a doctor before beginning any herbal regimen. Now, that being said, go ahead and have that fourth Tongkat Ali of the day: you know you want it!
