A Simple Answer To Free Radicals & Antioxidants
A free radical is a molecule that has lost one of its electrons leaving it with an odd number of electrons.
These unbalanced free radical molecules attempt to stabilize try to stabalize themselves by grabbing an electron from a healthy molecule. Where this grabbing occurs could injure your cells. The cell in turn could malfunction and thereby cause disease, or maybe even cancer. Also, these radicals are believed to cause the aging process.
A bad lifestyle, toxins in the air, environment can cause free radicals. Especially the metabolizing of “junk food”.
Antioxidants are nutritional compounds found in whole foods, or supplements, that have extra electrons (see the pattern here). When an antioxidant meets a free radical – the antioxidant gives an electron to the free radical. So now, no grabbing that extra electron from a healthy molecule. The antioxidant nutrients themselves do not become free radicals when they “donate” an electron because they are stable in either form.
Our body can produce anixoxidants, , but under conditions of stress, poor diet, toxicity, this antioxidant production can be impaired.
Eating a healthy whole food diet , plus, drinking plenty of water are two of the best ways you can protect your body from the damage of free radicals. What’s good for you… Fruits, Vegetables, Grains.
Ganoderma Lucidum Reishi is full of these healthy antioxidants!!!
